History Repeats Itself -- What Will Happen Before the Second Coming of the Lord

History repeats itself -- not exactly, but in similar types of ways.  So, if you want to know what's going to happen before the Second Coming of the Lord, look at what has happened in the past.  

Members of the church know that very difficult times will come before the Lord returns to clean house and wipe the wicked off the face of the earth.  But we have the promises of the Lord, that he will protect us as he destroys the wicked (see 1 Nephi 22).

There are some pretty scary insights found in the scriptures.  It is wisdom in the Lord to give us some information about what is coming to prepare us without getting into too much detail (which would scare us to death).  We know that the saints must go to Zion for safety to avoid the wars and violence everywhere.  The Lord has said --

And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety (D&C 45: 68).  

This implies that there will be wars and contention in the world, peace and safety in Zion (meaning Jackson County, Missouri AND wherever the pure in heart gather together).  And it means there will be a separation between them, which has not happened yet.  Right now the righteous live among the wicked in towns and cities throughout the world.  At some point that will change.  (It is not logistically possible for righteous people around the world to all move to Utah or Missouri.  They will gather in areas all over the world.  Do you really think we are going to build all these temples, church buildings and stake centers just a few years before we have to abandon them?  No -- we are building the places of refuge where we will gather.  The day will come when righteous non-members will join with members of the church and camp out in and around temples, meeting houses, stake centers, and other church properties.

There is a people who were in the same situation we are in -- dealing with the wicked who were murderers and thieves while waiting on the Lord to come and fix the world.  And they recorded what happened.  I'm talking about the Nephites and The Book of Mormon.  We know that this book was written for our day.

Elder David A. Bednar said in October 2024 general conference, quoting Pres. Ezra Taft Benson, that "The Book of Mormon was written for our day.  The Nephites never had the book.  It was written for us."  He went on to say that Mormon abridged centuries of Nephite history to write what was most important for us to know.  Elder Bednar told us to ask, "Why did the Lord inspire him to put that in? What lesson can I learn from this?"

With that in mind, the same sorts of things that happened then will happen again with us.  The Lord allowed some of his people, especially prophets, to be killed when they preach to the wicked (including people who were in secret combinations) -- just like he allowed all of the original 12 apostles to be killed (except Judas Iscariot who hung himself, and John the Beloved who was allowed to live). 

However, one of the recurring lessons in The Book of Mormon is that the Lord protects his people.  Many lessons demonstrating this are repeated throughout the book to show us that He remembers his covenant people during their trials.  When the Nephites trusted and relied on the Lord, he always helped them win battles against the Lamanites, or against the secret combination that laid siege to Zarahemla -- this happened when the righteous Nephites and Lamanites had to join forces to defend against the enormous army of the secret combination which happened just a few years before the Lord came to the Nephites (see 3 Nephi chapters 2-4).  That doesn't mean there weren't any casualties among the Nephites, but shows that the Lord helps people according to their faith.  Remember the stripling warriors -- in one of their terrible battles, all were wounded but none were slain (see Alma 57).

So, when we read in the books of Alma (especially toward the end), Helaman, and 3 Nephi -- the same pattern of events that happened to them will happen to us.  We will be in danger and it will be difficult, but the Lord will help us get through it.  We have secret combinations just like they did.  These evil people are seeking money and power, just like in the days of the Nephites.  First they infiltrated the government, then had sole control of the government, then they overthrew the Nephite government.  We know something similar will happen in the United States when the Constitution will hang by a thread, or as Pres. Benson said: the Constitution will not be saved in Washington, if it is saved at all it will be by men who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood.  

I know from my studies that the secret combination of our day has already infiltrated the US government and probably has sole control of it now.  It is inevitable that the US government will be overthrown and fall at some point in the not-too-distant future.  With all the chaos going on right now, it's not hard to imagine that happening.  In addition, The Book of Mormon mentions the secret combination committing many murders, including several chief judges.  That has also been happening in our day.  From my studies I know that Pres. John F. Kennedy was killed by the secret combination (aka The Deep State) and the leaders in the CIA and FBI helped cover it up (it is true what Jim Garrison said:  people in the US government and in law enforcement conspired to kill JFK -- Oswald never fired a shot.  Jim Garrison indicted CIA agent Clay Shaw as part of the conspiracy to kill JFK, which he was involved in).  Also, over 100 murders of politicians, police, journalists, associates of JFK, and people in the mafia were part of the coverup of JFK's assassination (see Hit List, Belzer).  Two assassination attempts, perhaps more, were made on President Trump.  Many strange deaths surround Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the Bush family.  It's interesting that George H.W. Bush was mentioned as being in the CIA and in Dallas the day JFK was killed.....

The bottom line is that we can go back to read in The Book of Mormon to understand what is coming next for us and how the Lord will support us during this difficult time.  We need to keep the commandments and keep the faith.
